about

<<Off into the story acceleration incubator! After the EP "even STRibber" (Comfortzone 2012), Gary Danner and Elisa Rose aka STATION ROSE (STR) have set a musical sign again with the online EP "NEXT". If we were to list the art interventions and actions that have taken place since then as well, we would probably need a whole page. So let's concentrate on the music. Whereby "NEXT" is again not only a release in itself, but the catalog "NEXT Digital Quarter Century" appears parallel to it. For a few years now, the Austrian cyberspace and audiovisual pioneers have been creating synergies between the digital and updates of the analog. Or rather do-it-yourself production. Thus the EP appears on their label Gunafa Rec. and the catalog as a self-publication in the self-publishing house Gunafa Books. No InDesign but most likely aesthetics of early CD-ROM programming.

The current EP makes clear - quasi negatively spoken - how former utopias are dissolved in the current economic discourse (cyberspace vs. "social media"), and - quasi positively spoken - how related style surfings sound beyond the eclectic. Well, STR have always been a source of confusion for music and media historians. So it's hardly surprising that the "genre" Krautstep, originally launched as a joke, makes more than sense. Krautrock and its psychedelics, ranging from Maghrebian acid trance on the track "3000" to Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd - as a general reference projection - as well as an Exotica-like background for considerations for the future of the Net with "The Dark Web". "Pattern University" is a number that still most closely adheres to familiar attributions to dubstep; though here as "plastic sounds" by recording studio wizard Raymond Scott more than bass thunderstorms. And the production tools range from psychedelic guitar distortions over iPads, to the use of a Mellotron. Again, history, after all, the Mellotron was a popular sound generator for prog rock. The EP closes with a short live recording of a concert by the Danube for STR's project Pixel Home. In general, "NEXT" spreads a thoroughly relaxed atmosphere. Which, however, turns out to be more and more deceptive in the course of listening. It is a good 23-minute soundtrack about the unease in culture, by no means dystopian, but also not euphoric, but scanning space and time>>.

<<Digital Natives Station Rose (online since 1991) continue their way towards "Krautstep" with "NEXT", without forgetting Gary Danner's (The Vogue) psychedelic roots (from the sixties to acid house), or their eight-month stay in Cairo in 1988. Arabic percussion & chopped up guitar samples (combined with techno, punk and minimal), as well as reminiscences of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop come into play here, as well as glimpses of the future of "The Dark Web">>.
